Reference and Research Services
The reference librarians are available to help Library users locate information and to provide assistance in legal research methodology. They hold degrees in both law and library science. During the school year, the Reference Desk is staffed approximately 60 hours per week
Interlibrary Loans
Materials not available in the Law Library or on the University campus may be acquired for students and faculty from other libraries. Students or faculty should determine the availability of the material on campus before making a request for an interlibrary loan.
Full bibliographic information on the material is needed before a request can be made to another library. All interlibrary loan requests should be submitted to the Associate Law Librarian. The Associate Law Librarian will not forward any requests that exceed the guidelines accompanying the Copyright Act.
Students and faculty will be notified of the status of a request. Material will be checked out to the requesting patron as soon as it arrives in the Library. A week before the material is due at the lending library, the borrowing patron will receive a reminder of the due date.
Access for Users with Disabilities
In Kivett Library, there is an internal elevator. The elevator is located slightly to the left of the connecting doors and behind the wall, where the copier is located.
There is no internal elevator in Wiggins Library; however, users with disabilities are provided with a key to the elevator, conveniently located immediately outside and to the left of the main Library entrance. The elevator key is housed at the Circulation Desk. If you need assistance, see the student worker on duty.
Carrel Assignments
Individual study carrels are located on all levels of the Law Library. Law students may reserve carrels at the beginning of the academic year. The use of a carrel is a privilege, not a right. Each student must sign a "Carrel Agreement" as a condition to reserving a carrel. Failure to comply with Library Policies and Procedures will result in forfeiture of all carrel privileges. Inquiries concerning assignments may be made to the Associate Law Librarian for Information Services
Computer Labs
The law library provides two computer labs for law student use. Housing forty-five computers, these computers are installed with the Microsoft Office and Corel WordPerfect Office suites and provide access to the Internet.
Exam Files
The Library maintains a collection of Law School examinations from previous years in the Reserve Collection. Most, but not all, professors contribute to this collection. The exams may be photocopied or used in the Library but cannot be removed from the building. It is a violation of the Law Student Honor Code to remove examinations from these files and not return them. This unauthorized removal denies access of other law students to previous examinations.
Library Reading Rooms
The law library houses two reading rooms; the main reading room and the First Citizens Bank & Trust Company Reading Room. This Reading Room is located in the foyer between the ground floor of Wiggins Hall and the first floor of Kivett. In this area are comfortable couches and chairs arranged in casual groupings. It is a place for students to relax and read current news sources and popular magazines.
Major North Carolina newspapers, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and other daily newspapers are housed in this area. In addition, legal newspapers including the National Law Journal, New York Law Journal, and the North Carolina Lawyers Weekly are available to students.
Photocopiers
There are three photocopiers available for use. Two are located on the main level of Wiggins Hall and one can be found in the basement level of Wiggins Hall. The charge for copying is ten cents per copy. Copicards for use with all of the photocopiers are available for sale at the Circulation Desk. Copicards are programmed for a set number of dollars, not a set number of copies. When you purchase a card, please write your name on the matte strip located on the back of the card. All three photocopiers are coin-operated. Change for the photocopiers is available at the Circulation Desk.
Wireless Network Access
Wireless network access is available to students. With the proper equipment, students can access the network on every floor of the Library and in most of the Law School building.
