Case Law and Statutory Law

The law library maintains an extensive collection of case and statutory law. The bulk of this collection is housed in the Wiggins Basement. It includes the National Reporter System, North Carolina and Virginia reporters. The law library also maintains a subscription to the United States Code and various annotated federal codes as well as numerous state codes. In addition to the books, public patrons can access these materials on Westlaw from the computer workstations across from the Circulation Desk

Digests

Digests are the primary finding tools for cases. The library subscribes to the Decennial Digest, available regional digests, United States Supreme Court Digests and various specialty digests. Digests are located in Wiggins Basement level.

Federal Regulations

Federal Regulations are first issued in the Federal Register. The regulations are published in chronological order in the Federal Register; they are then printed in topical order in the Code of Federal Regulations. The library has the complete microform run of the Federal Register, which is housed in Room 009 on the basement level of Wiggins Library. An online, full-text access to the Federal Register is located at www.heinonline.org.

The annual compilation of federal regulations is the Code of Federal Regulations. The current volumes of the C.F.R. are on microfiche and are housed in Room 009 on the basement level of Wiggins Library. The C.F.R. is arranged in numerical order by title.

The Federal Register and the C.F.R. are also available on Westlaw and Lexis, and through several web sites on the Internet as well as LexisNexis Congressional, a database of Congressional documents to which the library subscribes. There is a link to the C.F.R. from the Law Library web page, or students can access the C.F.R. directly at http://www.gpoaccess.gov/cfr/index.html.

Briefs and Records

The Law Library maintains a collection of briefs and records for cases decided by the North Carolina Supreme Court, the North Carolina Court of Appeals, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Briefs and records for the North Carolina Courts are arranged by official citation and are located on the basement level of Wiggins Library. The Library has the briefs and records for the cases printed in volumes 284 - 352 of the North Carolina Supreme Court Reports and volumes 44 - 136 of the North Carolina Court of Appeals Reports. Beginning in 1998, petitions, briefs, and records for both courts were made available online at www.ncappellatecourts.org. North Carolina Supreme Court Briefs and Records are also available on microfiche. The Microfiche Collection begins with volume 306 of the North Carolina Reports.

Briefs and records for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court Briefs and records are available on microfiche and are located in the Basement of Kivett Hall. The briefs and records are arranged alphabetically by case name.

Please inquire at the Circulation Desk for assistance in locating briefs and records. Students needing briefs not in the collection should contact the reference librarians

Government Documents

The University's Carrie Rich Memorial Library is a selective government depository Library that obtains and makes available copies of many government documents, most of which circulate to students of Campbell University. Government Documents are located in the basement of Kivett Hall, just around the corner from the Career Services office and Library Technical Services.

The Law Library houses many government documents specifically related to law studies. This material consists of agency decisions and orders, all of which are shelved on the basement level of Wiggins Library.

The Law Library also subscribes to several commercial services that are useful finding tools for locating government documents. Included is the Congressional Information Service (CIS) Index and Abstracts that is located on the ground level of Wiggins Library.

The Law Library has also loaded thousands of government document bibliographic records into our online catalog. These document records contain a link directly to the web site housing the document.

Law Reviews and Other Periodicals

The Library maintains an extensive periodical collection in law and law-related fields. Most legal periodicals are shelved on levels three and four of Kivett Library and are arranged according to call number (K1 to K26). The call number arrangement corresponds generally to an alphabetical arrangement by title. However, because of title changes, some titles are shelved in areas that do not correspond to the alphabetical arrangement. For assistance in locating periodicals, you may consult the online catalog or Circulation Desk attendant.

Numerous newsletters published by sections of the American Bar Association or other groups are shelved in notebooks on levels one and two of Kivett Library. Current issues of Lawyers Weekly are kept on Reserve. Current issues of the National Law Journal and the New York Law Journal are shelved in the reading room.

Periodical indexes are available in printed formats and online. The Index to Legal Periodicals, the Current Law Index, and the Index to Periodical Articles Related to Law are housed on an index table against the wall on level four of Kivett Librar . The Current Index to Legal Periodicals is also available at the Law Library's web site from all network computers. LegalTrac, the Index to Legal Periodical Full-text, and the Index to Legal Periodicals Retrospective are online indexes to legal periodicals that can be accessed through the Law Library's web site.

Periodicals are sent to the bindery each month. A list of journals currently at the bindery is available at the Circulation Desk. If a journal article is needed and the journal is at the bindery, a photocopy of the article may be obtained through interlibrary loan.

Photocopies of articles in periodicals not available on the campus may be obtained through interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loan requests should be given to the Public Services / Reference Librarian.

Looseleaf Services

Current legal information on a wide range of subjects is available in the Library's collection of topical looseleaf services. Current services from Lexis/Nexis, Matthew Bender, Aspen, CCH, and Thomson/West are located on levels one and two of Kivett Library. All tax services are shelved in the Harris-Loftis Tax Collection on the ground level of Wiggins Library. Looseleaf services do not circulate.

Study Aids

Many study aids are published for law student use. The Law Library does not collect course outlines or compilations of case briefs keyed to casebooks. The Library does maintain a comprehensive collection of treatises, Restatements, Hornbooks, and West Nutshells designed to cover the same subject areas as law school courses. Current editions of Nutshells and Hornbooks are kept on Reserve.

Treatises

The Library's treatise collection is classified by the Library of Congress classification system and is shelved in call number order on the first and second levels of Kivett Library. Any call number beginning with the letters "A" through "KF 2970" will be shelved on the first level of Kivett Library. All other materials will be shelved on level two.

Some classified treatises are on Reserve. In the Online Public Catalog, Reserve materials are simply noted as Reserve in the collection field. If a particular item cannot be found, ask at the Circulation Desk.
