Honors & Awards

 

Academic Honors List: Students whose weighted academic averages for a particular semester have placed them in the upper ten percent of their respective classes are named on the "Academic Honors List."

Branch Banking & Trust Company Estate Planning Award: Substantial cash awards are given for outstanding achievement in a contest sponsored by Branch Banking & Trust Company for third-year students participating in the Estate Planning seminar.

Calhoun Advocacy Awards: Awards recognizing the best performances in the Trial and Appellate Advocacy Program. Sponsored by M. Jean Calhoun, Class of 1980.

Campbell Book Awards: Certificates are given to the students making the highest grades in courses.

Deans' Outstanding Improvement: Awards Cash award to the student exhibiting the most outstanding academic improvement over his or her law school career. The recipient is selected by the Dean and Associate Dean.

Fred O. Dennis Award: Cash award to the graduating student whose work best represents the School of Law to the community, the profession, and the public.

Rick Edmundson Memorial Award: Cash award to the top competitor in the annual School of Law Intramural Moot Court Competition. Sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Richard I. Edmundson, in memory of Rick Edmundson, Class of 1985.

International Academy of Trial Lawyers Student Advocacy Program: A certificate is presented to the law student who has demonstrated distinguished achievement in a student advocacy program, and the student's name is added to the permanent plaque in the Law School.

The Howard Fund Christian Citizenship Award: An annual award of $300 or more is made to a graduating senior whose citizenship and leadership exemplify the Christian character and aspirations of the School of Law and fulfill the opportunities for Christian service in the legal profession. This award is provided by the Howard Memorial Christian Education Fund, Inc.

I. Beverly Lake Award for Excellence in Constitutional Law: Cash awards ranging from $100 to $600 are made each year to a student or students demonstrating exemplary achievement in the field of constitutional law. The award was established in honor of the contribution of the former North Carolina Supreme Court Justice and his family. Please click here for more information.

Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition: Cash prizes of $500 and $200 are given for the best student papers on copyright law. The competition is sponsored by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Winning papers are eligible for the national competition with a top prize of $3,000.

National Association of Women Lawyers Award: Presented to an outstanding graduating senior, this award is based on academic achievement, motivation and potential for contribution to the advancement of women in the profession and in society.

North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers Advocacy Award: Book awards are presented to the most improved students in trial or appellate advocacy.

Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society: Students are selected for membership in this national honor society based on their academic achievements, leadership and character.

Order of the Barristers: Membership in the national society is awarded to students for outstanding performance in the art of advocacy.

Order of Old Kivett: Awarded to those students who have excelled in the areas of trial and appellate advocacy and who have represented the Law School in an exemplary fashion in regional or national advocacy competitions while maintaining the highest of ethical standards.

Jane Perkinson Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a third-year law student based on scholastic achievement. The recipient receives a free BARBRI bar review course.

Safran Moot Court Awards: Cash award for outstanding contribution to the moot court program at the School of Law. Sponsored by Perry R. Safran, Class of 1981.

West Group Award for Excellence in Law and Medicine: Book award presented to the student receiving the highest grade in the Law and Medicine course.

West Publishing Company Outstanding Academic Achievement: Awards Book awards for the students achieving the highest academic average in their first year, second year, third year, and overall law school career.

Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities: Students are selected for recognition in this national publication based on their academic achievement, leadership and contributions to the School of Law and the greater University community.

Webster Scholars: Each academic year, three to five outstanding law students with a special interest in real property law are selected by Professor Patrick K. Hetrick and Professor James B. McLaughlin to serve as Webster Scholars. Webster Scholars assist in the revision of Webster's Real Estate Law in North Carolina, a two-volume work recognized as the leading treatise on real estate law in North Carolina. Webster Scholars are paid as research assistants and receive a personal copy of the treatise.

Williston Scholars: Each academic year, five outstanding rising second-year law students are selected by Professor Richard A. Lord to serve as Williston Scholars. Williston Scholars assist in the revision of Williston on Contracts, a multi-volume nationally recognized treatise, during the summer between their first and second years and throughout the following academic year. Williston Scholars are paid as research assistants and receive other benefits.
